COMPUTATIONAL FLUIDS DYNAMICS (CFD) MODELLING
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Modelling is a method used to simulate the behaviour of fluid flow (such as air, water, or gases) using numerical analysis and algorithms. CFD modeling allows engineers and scientists to predict how fluids will behave under different conditions, such as in a fire scenario, ventilation systems, or around structures. PyroSim is a user-friendly graphical interface for the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), a widely used CFD tool developed by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology), specifically designed to simulate fire-driven fluid flow, while PyroSim provides a visual platform for creating and managing simulations.
Key aspects of CFD modeling include:
- Fluid Flow Simulation: CFD uses mathematical equations, known as the Navier-Stokes equations, to model the movement of fluids. These equations account for factors like velocity, pressure, temperature, and turbulence, providing a detailed understanding of how fluids move and interact with their environment.
- 3D Representation: A 3D model of the environment or system of interest is created, and CFD software calculates how the fluid moves through this space. The model simulates various conditions, such as temperature changes, pressure variations, or the presence of obstacles like walls, vents, or equipment.
- Heat and Mass Transfer: In addition to fluid flow, CFD can simulate heat transfer (e.g., cooling and heating systems) and mass transfer (e.g., gas
dispersion, and smoke movement), which are critical in fire safety engineering, HVAC systems, and energy management. - Fire and Smoke Modelling: CFD is widely used in fire safety engineering to model the behavior of fire and smoke in buildings, tunnels, or other enclosed spaces. It helps predict how fire will spread, how smoke will move, and how long it will take to reach certain areas, aiding in the design of fire protection systems, egress routes, and ventilation.
- Optimization: CFD modeling allows engineers to test various design configurations or scenarios to optimize performance, safety, and efficiency. It is an essential tool for industries like aerospace, automotive, and fire safety.
